A plumber has around eight years training in the US. That's to fix my goddamn toilet. Yet, how much training do you have to do to be allowed to build software for a plane carrying hundreds of people? - Jim Coplien

Target

Camotes trip

Our internship program is specifically targeted for 3rd year, 4th year computer science students from local universities in and around Cebu. Other areas are ok, as long as you can join us in our Cebu office for the program.

Schedule

We are now actively looking for our 1st batch of interns, for April to June 2008. Tentatively, the Internship program starts on April 15th and will run through July 15th.

Requirements

A short resume about yourself. And a copy (scanned if sending via e-mail) of your transcript of records (certified from the school).

FAQ

Is there an employment contract after the OJT? -- NO, you are not required to work with us after the program, not even later. If you are really good and we think you might be a good hire, and if we are actively hiring, then we will give you an offer. Other than that, there's no commitment from us, nor from you as well.

What's the reporting schedule? -- It is 4 to 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday.

Are you going to sign my OJT paper? -- YES, even if you will officially take OJT for your schools later (as long as your school also allows it).

I am going back to school in June for my 4th year classes, is it possible to have a flexible schedule by then? -- YES, we allow a flexible schedule based on your load.

What is the exam about? I want to study for it -- The exam is based on basic computer science topics such as algorithms and data structures. If you understand the concepts properly, you shouldn't need to memorize or study for it.

I have a very unique, original, billion dollar idea -- and i don't like SIMPLETEQ to steal them, what to do? -- If it's really super, uber secret we would suggest you should do it yourself (trust no-one!). However for ideas shared and discovered during the course of the program, for truly unique and original idea, ownership of that idea is honored and respected. However, an idea is nothing without an implementation. So, there's really not much to hold to just an idea.

What if the web product we develop during the internship program is successful and has the potential to earn millions (take that Bill!) -- For succesful situations like this, we value the team more rather than the idea, so we want to make an offer (as interns, you can turn down our offer) to continue to support it (programming help, resources, guidances) with the existing team for an exchange in a minority stake (5%-20% depending on involvement) of the new business formed around the web product. It is also possible for one of us (SIMPLETEQ -- Mark, Franee, Dion, Norlan and Harm) to join the founding team for the web product and it will be in the concensus and agreement with everyone involved, including the interns.

How many times we go out for movies? -- every time there's a good movie showing (Star Cinema movies not applicable)

Threadless photo

What programming language are we going to use -- Ruby, Shell scripting.

How will i know if i will be a great programmer? My Mom wants me to audition for PBB -- You don't. You need to have both motivation and will to learn and grow to be a great programmer.

I just bought a super great book, 'Teach yourself Java in 24 hours'. Who needs your internship program? I'm a programmer in 24 hours -- We are very happy for you. The book we're reading teaches us to be a great programmer in 10 years.

Will i be able to use your company as a reference, when i find work after graduation -- Yes, we will be happy to endorse you.

I just read on the mailing list, someone is asking 30k to train programmers with RubyOnRails, why are you offering it for free -- what's the catch? -- It's simple, we learn everything we know now for free, so we have a moral obligation to give back and help the next generation of programmers.

B*llsh*t. I don't fall for that emotional crap. Spill it out! -- Okay, we also thought about the cost-benefit impact of the program. The internship program is part of our strategy to keep and maintain only the best programmers in the community. By offering students to learn and try what we do, to live our lifestyle -- it offers us an unprecendented look into who might be great programmers to hire. It's hard to decide on a programmer after a few encounter (exam, interview), the internship program is our way of looking into more over a period of time, and doing actual work.

Whoa! I think you're giving out your secret! Why, oh why? -- We think it's not a secret at all. In fact, in our business, there's no secret. Our only secret, or shall we say advantage is our people. And, no amount of "knowing" or spilling our secret can take that away from us.

Aha! Now i know this is all part of a business ploy, why should i still apply -- We still think you should apply, since there's no obligation at all. For interns, the only obligation is to learn, participate and achieve on your own. And only when we think you're going to be a good hire, we are going to offer you a job, or better, offer to continue working with your web product. And, you can always turn us down.

Are you going to give our certificates i can hang on the wall? -- NO, we have instead online certificates. We will publish the list of interns on this website -- unless of course you think it's detrimental to your health.

OKAY, i'm ready! How do i sign-up? -- Contact us, see more information below.
